You Are Seen
You Are Seen: Women’s Contemporary Art Practices in Southeast Asia from the Personal Collection of Krystina Lyon, is a curatorial art book exploring the practices of 35 women and gender diverse contemporary artists from Southeast Asia, combining personal collecting, artist voices and critical perspectives on visibility and representation.
You Are Seen is rooted in a quiet yet powerful intention, reflecting Krystina Lyon’s commitment to recognising women artists and honouring the depth behind their work. Rather than relying on overt visual expression, the designers at SWELL took a more considered approach by allowing meaning to emerge through materiality. The cover features mounted bookbinder’s mull, an open-weave cotton fabric traditionally used to reinforce a book’s spine, essential yet often hidden from view.
Here, it is brought forward, exposed, and given presence. Its tactile texture and distinctive aesthetic draw attention not just to the object, but to what it represents, much like the unseen voices it seeks to honour. In this way, the material becomes more than functional, taking on a symbolic role where what was once overlooked is now centred, held, and acknowledged.
It is a subtle yet intentional gesture where material and meaning come together as one.
